NETIQUETTE
INTRODUCTION
Netiquette is a term describing how to interact clearly and respectfully with others in an online environment, and this interaction is very important to our online studies. And here is the following reason why it is very important.
TO UNDERSTAND THE RULE OF ETIQUETTE
Netiquette becomes more and more important for instructors to understand the rules of etiquette that, when followed, help make the individual postings easy to follow, keep conversation threads focused, and when followed, help make the individual postings easy to follow, keep conversation threads focused, and the overall discussion on-track.
THE CONSEQUENCES OF BAD NETIQUETTE IN THE CLASS
Unregulated, an online discussion can quickly disintegrate into a tangled web of extraneous verbiage, rude language, and inconsiderate behaviour guaranteed to derail the conversation. The basic premise is that the etiquette expected of your students in online discussions is the same as that which you expect in a classroom.
WHEN ADDRESSED OF BAD NETIQUETTE IN THE CLASS
It is very bad to be addressed bad netiquette in class. Because it creates a bad picture for other peers in the group. And sometimes you can feel it is okay but psychological may affect a lot of people in the classroom. Such bad netiquette may be using bad language, such as racism, poverty, and discrimination. And even using language which can make a person feel bad. For example, for me, when a person tells me that my English is not good and is very clap, bad and I wonder why you didn`t go to learn English. To me can be a big challenge and even can make me, feel inferior to complexity. So, netiquette should be used to help people who are poor in grammar, and also to have a good interaction. And others can feel bad about the situations in which bad netiquette in the classroom is happening. So, we need to use our language very well and feel comfortable.
HOW DOES NETIQUETTE RELATE TO PEER ASSESSMENT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO USE GOOD MANNERS WHEN LEAVING FEEDBACK?
Netiquette relates to peer assessment because it includes the interaction of the students online and sharing ideas, and views due to the topic or assignments given by the university. So, netiquette is a daily activity behavior that students have on the internet, to socialize with others on the internet. It is good to use netiquette in the peer assessment because raises general awareness and helps to enhance the learning experience of the students, and it is important to use good manners when leaving feedback in the group. Not using bad language or anything that can make a person feel bad about it. And here are some rules that can be used to prevent bad manners in online discussion.
- Participate: This is a shared learning environment. No lurking in the cyberspace background. It is not enough to log in and read the discussion thread of others. For the maximum benefit to all, everyone must contribute.
- Avoid Repetition: Read everything in the discussion thread before replying. This will help you avoid repeating something someone else has already contributed. Acknowledge the points made with which you agree and suggest alternatives for those with which you don’t.
- Use Proper Writing Style: The academic environment expects higher-order language. Write as if you were writing a term paper. Correct spelling, grammatical construction, and sentence structure are expected in every other writing activity associated with scholarship and academic engagement. Online discussions are no different. Avoid profanity.
- Cite Your Sources: Another big must! If your contribution to the conversation includes the intellectual property (authored material) of others, e.g., books, newspapers, magazines, or journal articles—online or in print—they must be given proper attribution.
- Respect Diversity: It’s an ethnically rich and diverse, multi-cultural world in which we live. Use no language that is—or that could be construed to be—offensive toward others. Racists, sexist, and heterosexist comments and jokes are unacceptable, as are derogatory and/or sarcastic comments and jokes directed at religious beliefs, disabilities, and age. We all come with different perspectives, so please be respectful and resist the urge to tell anyone they are wrong. Understand they have had different life experiences and all of our world views are simply different.
